Part 3 of 4. The true Self, the fruit of the Spirit, burdens, and the Healer.

When protecting parts step back even a little, something quieter shows up. You are not as flooded. You can look at a part without attacking it. IFS calls that the true Self, and says the Self was never damaged the way the parts were. That is the image of God in you, still whole underneath.

Two vocabularies, one life

Schwartz noticed eight qualities when people were in that place. Calm. Curiosity. Compassion. Clarity. Confidence. Courage. Creativity. Connectedness.

Galatians 5 already had a name for that kind of life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are not different personalities. They are two vocabularies for what happens when the foundation is leading and the Spirit is giving life to it.

Calm feels like peace. Compassion is love and kindness. Curiosity is patience: you stay with the part instead of rushing it. Clarity sits near self-control. Courage and confidence sit near faithfulness. Connectedness is love with a body. Joy says the story is not finished. Creativity is that joy making a new move towards Beauty.

Do not treat the lists as a code. Schwartz was not writing a commentary on Paul. The likeness of God, when it is not buried under burdens, looks like fruit of the Spirit. The 8 C’s are how that fruit shows up toward your own inner life.

The true Self is not a second god you generate. It is His image in you. We do not send parts off to heal themselves. We invite them to befriend Christ, so that He can bring true healing. The Spirit grows the fruit. Use the map. Do not worship the mosaic, and do not worship the map.

The sentence that feels like your name

I am too much. I am damaged goods. God is done with me. That did not arrive as a thought. It arrived as a lie from the enemy of your soul. IFS calls those false beliefs burdens. They attach to a part and then talk as if they are your whole identity.

Patitsas says trauma force-feeds a heretical truth: a partial picture that claims to be the whole image. In our language that burden is sin. It separates you from God and distorts His image. The heresy underneath is, there is no foundation left.

You cannot usually argue that slogan off a part. The day it formed it felt like revelation. Beauty has to get there first. A presence that does not fit the lie. That presence has a name. Invite the wounded part to befriend Christ. He lifts the false identity. He brings true healing.

Humility tells the truth about our place. A burden tells a lie about our worth. They are not the same voice.

Next: how not to crush the parts, and how to begin this week.

If you live in California

You do not have to sort the parts alone. I walk this work with California residents by telehealth anywhere in the state, and in person in Redding. We start where the foundation still is: the image of God in you. We treat every part as something to meet, not something to exile or display. As Christians we invite wounded parts to befriend Christ, so that He can bring true healing.

This is not crisis care. If you are in immediate danger, call 988 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are ready for a slower, Scripture-honoring conversation about the parts that have been running your life, you are welcome to reach out.
