How I Met My Parts (and why this page exists)

I did not come to Internal Family Systems because it was trendy. I came because insight was not enough.

I could name the patterns. I could explain the family system. I could even coach other people toward change. Inside, parts of me were still braced, still scanning, still trying to keep the old pain from landing. Talk helped me understand. It did not always help my body believe I was safe.

IFS gave me a different map. Not “what is wrong with you,” but “which part is working so hard right now, and what is it afraid would happen if it stopped.” Managers who plan and perform. Firefighters who numb or explode. Exiles who carry what was too much, too soon. And underneath that, Self: the part of me that can be curious instead of at war.

As an neurodivergent woman with a long trauma history, I needed language that was concrete. Less poetry. More structure. Permission to go slowly. Permission for protectors to stay in the room until they trusted the process. IFS, done well, can do that. Done carelessly, or turned into a DIY deep-dive, it can open doors you are not ready to walk through alone.

I have also studied the model formally. I completed the six-month IFS Online Circle, took Spirituality and IFS with Dick Schwartz, and completed six hours of training in IFS from a Christian worldview with Julie Honeycutt, MMFT and her husband, Dr. James Honeycutt. That mix matters to me. It keeps the clinical map intact while leaving room for faith, without forcing either one to swallow the other.

I use IFS now as a client and as a clinician-in-training. I do not treat it like a personality quiz or a spiritual bypass. I treat it as a relationship with an inner system that learned to survive.

This page is not therapy. It is a starter shelf: official explainers, short videos, and a few tools you can use to get oriented before or between sessions. Read them. Watch what feels useful. Stop if a part says this is too much.

If something here helps you feel less alone with your inner world, that is enough for a first step. The work itself happens in relationship, at a pace your protectors can stand.
